SEVEN YEARS AN EAGLE
Seven Years an Eagle is set in Naples, Florida, WHEN THERE WAS ONE………
one high school, Naples High School.
The single traffic light in Naples was located at the intersection of the Tamiami Trail and 22nd Avenue North, controlling the congestion generated by the lone high school.
By the late 1960’s, the sleepy fishing village was showing signs of becoming a tourist destination, but that was only a glimpse of what was to come.
Confusion and upheaval can be seen in the numbers: 7,6,5,4,3. Coach Bianchi was on the Naples High faculty for 7 years, during which time he served under 6 superintendents and 5 principals. During this period there were 4 head football coaches and Bianchi was the 3rd basketball coach whose tenure lasted for five years. He was the last basketball coach WHEN THERE WAS ONE high school in Naples.
Bianchi documents the successes and failures of the football program and the building of an area powerhouse in basketball.
George Bianchi writes the way he played, the way he coached, all in, no holds barred. The book is filled with great memories, with a keen understanding of school politics. There are honest reflections, sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant, with national events serving as sign posts along the way.
